An interest-free car loan is worth asking about if you work in Barbados’ public service. POLTA, the Government’s Public Officers Loan and Travelling Allowances scheme, provides a vehicle-loan route for qualifying officers. Government policy includes interest-free loans for electric and hybrid vehicles. It is not a Carcay loan, and approval is not automatic. Government Budget Speech, 2022, page 46.
Who may qualify?
Government employment alone is not enough. Your exact official post and appointment status matter. The published General Orders generally refer to the substantive holder of a scheduled post, with limited provisions for acting appointments. Ask your HR or Personnel team to check your circumstances. Is your post listed?
This reference combines the published First Schedule with the 2025 amendment, including nursing and police additions. A similar title in a different department does not confirm that your post is covered.
A listed post is not loan approval. Your department, duties and appointment status must also be checked by HR or Personnel.

What are the loan terms?
Ask your employing office to confirm the current loan limit, your approved amount and repayment period. Do not assume a figure in an advert is your entitlement.
The published regulations provide for repayment within up to seven years, or a shorter approved period, normally through equal monthly salary deductions. The vehicle, required insurance and supporting documents also need to satisfy the official requirements. POLTA Regulations, regulations 3, 8 and 9.
How do you start?
- Check with HR or Personnel. Confirm your post, appointment status and the current application requirements.
- Get vehicle details and a quotation. Check that the proposed car meets the scheme’s requirements before committing.
- Apply through your employing office. Applications are routed through the Permanent Secretary or Head of Department for official processing. Regulation 3.
Do not pay a deposit on the assumption that the loan will be approved.
